For this blog, I’ll be going over a few synonyms and antonyms (10 each, 20 in total) as well as tips on when to use them for the word ‘coldly’. This problem actually occurs quite frequently in my upcoming debut romantasy/dystopia, ‘Fractured Bones‘, so I thought it’ll be fun to make a blog and also learn some new vocabulary if I can!

(Disclaimer: I am NOT a professional at this, these are just more or less of my genuine feelings when I’m using these words, so if you have other ideas or if I’m wrong, please point it out 🙏)
In my opinion, these words are pretty easy to differentiate because the synonyms all have negative connotations and the antonyms have positive connotations, but here are a few cases you need to consider!
- I would say that merrily, jubilantly and blithely are slightly more professional ? (I’ve honestly only seen these in classics/older or more serious texts)
- The word sweetly is often used in more of a sardonic/ironic way, at least from what I’ve read and written myself
- While nonchalantly does mean more like coolly/unconcerned, I feel like it evokes more of a carefree or casual mood, or like you’re pretending to act nonchalant if that makes sense? So it doesn’t really have that negative connotation, and I think it’s used in more lighthearted/teasing scenes
- Flatly and stiffly are more used in cases where the speaker doesn’t really want to talk/awkward situation, whereas coolly is when you’re trying to ignore someone/act like you don’t care
- Coldly, icily, and frostily are all when you’re not paying much attention/being cold-hearted/icy voice/etc.
- Curtly, briskly, and abruptly (you can think this one as ‘suddenly’ in a slightly offended way ??) aren’t THAT too cold (why is it so hard to describe it- 😭) but like think of when a teacher is scolding a teacher or grudgingly accepting an answer/reluctantly impressed if you get what I mean?
- Dourly is used when you’re feeling sullen/upset
- Mirthlessly is when you’re angry or upset but want to present it without mirth/without a single sense of happiness/sad or hurt but you’re trying to brush it off with satire (?)
- Gleefully and delightedly are used in more of a boasting/bragging/pleased/satisfied way
